Au Revoir Jean Paul Gaultier

17 Oct

I missed the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the Montreal Museum of  Fine Art that just ended on October 2.  I would have loved to been able to see the exhibit but due to the lack of funds, I wasn’t able to.  I had a co-worker who went to see the Gaultier exhibit the same time I went to see the McQueen exhibit and she loved it.  One of the things she found quite interesting that differs from other fashion exhibits were the projected moving faces on the mannequins.

The exhibition showcases 140 outfits spanning the course of his career.  Like the Alexander McQueen exhibit, it is presented thematically rather than chronologically and it is presented through the following themes:  The Odyssey of Jean Paul Gaultier,  The Boudoir, Skin Deep, Punk Cancan, Urban Jungle, and Metropolis.  Included in the exhibition are never before seen prints and photographs of Gaultier’s work by Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Robert Doisneau, Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts, Pierre et Gilles, Mario Testino, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, Ellen von Unwerth and Bettina Rheims.

There is also an accompanying exhibit book, “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” by Suzy Menkes and Nathalie Bondil  that will be available for purchase through book retailers in November.  Most likely I will be purchasing this since I didn’t have a chance to see it.  I only hope that the book includes photographs of all 140 outfits displayed in the exhibit.

The exhibit will also be traveling to the following museums:

Dallas Museum of Art
November 13, 2011 – February 12, 2012

Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, de Young
March 24 – August 19, 2012

Fundación Mapfre – Instituto de Cultura, Madrid
September 26 – November 18, 2012

Kunsthal Rotterdam, the Netherlands
February 9 – May 12, 2013

If I can save enough money, maybe I could go see the exhibit in one of those cities and have a nice vacation.
